Class Exercise 1

Task: Analyse Singapore General Elections 2011 tracker. What does this visualisation mean to you?

It took me quite a while to comprehend what this visualisation is trying to put across. With a whole chunk of information available, it is important to analyse the details bit by bit. The most prominent information to me is the 8 May key terms. There seems to be some sort of hierarchy in place as seen from the numbers on the left of the key terms. What puzzles me is why are there 2 numbers, and why is it that some key terms are being marked with a star symbol or a "-" symbol instead of numbers. I then realised that the first number represents the popularity level of that particular key term on the day before i.e. 7 May while the second number represents the popularity level of that particular key term for the 8 May. Those marked with a star symbol or a "-" symbol might probably be those key terms that maintains their popularity level.

Looking at the right side of the visualisation, there are feeds which seems to be coming from postings made in Twitter. The postings are ranked based on their popularity. It took me quite a while to realise that the postings are not only coming from Twitter, but some other sources as well. As mentioned by the creator, the feeds were based on news articles, blogs, as well as Twitter.

Next, there are the lines which eventually links up to the respective key terms. This line is probably the most crucial factor for this visualisation since it helps me to know at a glance on the trending topics for the days leading to the election. It is easy to see which key terms are getting more popular or less popular as the day went, which might eventually influence how I view the election.
